The 1912 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the V Olympiad, were held in Stockholm, Sweden. These games were notable for several reasons, including the introduction of new sports, the participation of new countries, and the debut of innovative technologies in sports.

Date and Duration: The games were held from May 5 to July 27, 1912.

Venues: The main venue was the Stockholm Olympic Stadium, which was specifically built for the event and had a capacity of 20,000 spectators. The stadium remains in use today and is one of the oldest Olympic stadiums still in operation.

Participants: The 1912 Olympics saw participation from 2,408 athletes (2,359 men and 48 women) representing 28 nations. This was a significant increase in participation compared to previous Olympics.

Events: There were 102 events in 14 sports, including athletics, swimming, cycling, fencing, gymnastics, rowing, shooting, and wrestling. New sports introduced in these games included modern pentathlon and decathlon.

Technological Innovations:
Electronic Timing: The 1912 Olympics were the first to use electronic timing devices for the track and field events, which greatly improved the accuracy of the results.
Public Address System: A public address system was used for the first time to make announcements to spectators.
Marathon Distance: The marathon distance was standardized to 42.195 kilometers (26 miles 385 yards), which had been established in the 1908 London Olympics.

Notable Athletes:
Jim Thorpe (USA): Thorpe won gold medals in both the pentathlon and decathlon and was celebrated for his versatility. However, he was later stripped of his medals due to a violation of amateurism rules (these were posthumously restored in 1983).
Hannes Kolehmainen (Finland): Kolehmainen won three gold medals in long-distance running (5,000 meters, 10,000 meters, and cross-country), becoming one of the first great long-distance runners in Olympic history.
Women’s Participation: Women competed in swimming and diving for the first time in the Olympics, marking an important step towards gender equality in sports.

Art Competitions: The Stockholm Olympics included art competitions, which were part of the official Olympic program at the time. Medals were awarded for works of art inspired by sport in architecture, literature, music, painting, and sculpture.

Medal Table: The United States topped the medal table with 25 gold medals, followed by Sweden with 24 golds. Great Britain and Finland also performed well.

Cultural Impact: The 1912 Olympics were well-organized and are often considered a model for future Olympic Games. The efficient planning and execution of the event demonstrated the importance of comprehensive preparation and innovation in hosting international sporting events.
