Abebe Bikila was born on August 7, 1932, in the village of Jato, near the town of Mendida in the Shewa province of Ethiopia.

Bikila returned to the Olympics in 1964 in Tokyo, this time wearing shoes. Despite undergoing an appendectomy just six weeks before the marathon, he won the gold medal again and broke his own world record with a time of 2 hours, 12 minutes, and 11.2 seconds.
He became the first athlete to win back-to-back Olympic marathons, solidifying his status as a legend in the sport.

Later Life and Legacy
1968 Mexico City Olympics:
Bikila attempted to compete in his third consecutive Olympics in Mexico City in 1968. However, he had to withdraw from the marathon at the 17-kilometer mark due to a leg injury.
His compatriot, Mamo Wolde, went on to win the gold, continuing Ethiopia’s dominance in long-distance running.

Accident and Paralysis:
In 1969, Bikila was involved in a car accident that left him paralyzed from the waist down. Despite his injuries, he remained active in sports, participating in wheelchair archery and table tennis competitions.

Death:
