Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President of the United States, serving from March 1861 until his assassination in April 1865. He is widely regarded as one of America’s greatest presidents due to his leadership during the Civil War and his efforts to end slavery.

Early Life:
Born on February 12, 1809, in a log cabin in Hardin County, Kentucky.
Grew up in a poor family and had very little formal education, teaching himself by reading books.
Worked various jobs, including as a rail-splitter, boatman, store clerk, and surveyor, before becoming a lawyer.

Political Career:
Served in the Illinois State Legislature as a member of the Whig Party.
Elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1846, serving one term.
Gained national recognition during debates with Stephen A. Douglas during the 1858 Illinois Senate race, although he lost the election.

Presidency:
Elected as the first Republican president in 1860.
Faced the secession of Southern states and the outbreak of the Civil War shortly after taking office.
Issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, which declared all slaves in Confederate-held territory to be free.
Delivered the Gettysburg Address on November 19, 1863, emphasizing national unity, liberty, and democracy.

Assassination:
Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth on April 14, 1865, while attending a play at Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C.
Died the following day on April 15, 1865.

Legacy:
Remembered for his leadership during the Civil War and his role in abolishing slavery.
Often ranked among the greatest U.S. presidents for his commitment to principles of equality and democracy.
Memorialized in numerous ways, including the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.
