Andrey Kolmogorov (1903–1987) was a highly influential Soviet mathematician who made profound contributions to a wide range of fields, particularly in probability theory, but also in turbulence, topology, logic, and the theory of algorithms. He is often regarded as one of the greatest mathematicians of the 20th century.

Early Life and Education
Born: April 25, 1903, in Tambov, Russia.
Background: Kolmogorov was raised by his aunts after his mother died during childbirth. His upbringing in a scholarly environment, coupled with a strong interest in mathematics from an early age, laid the foundation for his future achievements.
Education: He attended Moscow State University, where he studied under some of the most prominent mathematicians of the time. Kolmogorov quickly distinguished himself as a brilliant student, producing important work in various areas of mathematics while still very young.

Probability Theory:
Axiomatization of Probability (1933): Kolmogorov’s most famous work is in the field of probability theory. In 1933, he published “Foundations of the Theory of Probability,” where he provided a rigorous axiomatic framework for probability based on measure theory. This work is considered the foundation of modern probability theory, turning it into a well-defined mathematical discipline. Kolmogorov Complexity:
Algorithmic Information Theory: Kolmogorov also made significant contributions to the theory of algorithms and computational complexity. He introduced the concept of Kolmogorov complexity, which measures the complexity of an object (such as a string of text) by the length of the shortest possible description or program that can generate that object. This concept has had a lasting impact on the fields of computer science, information theory, and the philosophy of information.
Turbulence and Fluid Dynamics:
Kolmogorov’s Theory of Turbulence (1941): In the field of fluid dynamics, Kolmogorov developed a statistical theory of turbulence, which provided a theoretical framework for understanding the chaotic and seemingly random behavior of turbulent flows. His 1941 work on the energy cascade in turbulent flow is still a cornerstone of modern turbulence theory.
