Background: Danish Civil War and the Succession Crisis

Sweyn III (Svend III Grathe), the nephew of King Eric II, who was supported by parts of the nobility.
Canute V (Knud V), the son of the murdered King Magnus the Strong, another claimant with noble support.
Valdemar I (Valdemar the Great), who was the son of Canute Lavard, a Danish prince killed in 1131.

Denmark was effectively divided between these three rulers, and the country experienced a long civil war as they each struggled for power. The conflict involved shifting alliances and battles between the factions.

The Peace Agreement of 1157
In 1157, the three rivals tried to settle the succession dispute through a peace agreement mediated by the Danish nobility. They agreed to divide Denmark into three parts:
Sweyn III would rule over Zealand.
Canute V would rule over Funen.
Valdemar I would control Jutland.

However, this uneasy peace didn’t last. During a feast in Roskilde, meant to celebrate the agreement, Sweyn III betrayed the pact. He attempted to assassinate both Canute and Valdemar in a bid to claim sole control over Denmark. Canute was killed during the feast, but Valdemar managed to escape to Jutland.

The Battle of Grathe Heath
After the betrayal, Valdemar gathered his forces in Jutland, preparing to challenge Sweyn. The decisive confrontation occurred at Grathe Heath, located near the modern town of Viborg in central Jutland, on October 23, 1157.

Valdemar I’s Victory: With Sweyn III dead and Canute V already murdered, Valdemar I emerged as the sole ruler of Denmark. He was crowned king, marking the end of the civil war and beginning a new era of stability in Denmark.
Consolidation of Power: Valdemar I went on to become known as Valdemar the Great, a key figure in Danish history. His reign saw the centralization of royal power, the strengthening of the monarchy, and the expansion of Danish influence in the Baltic region.
