David Lange (pronounced “Long-ee”) (1942–2005) was a prominent New Zealand politician, best known for serving as the 32nd Prime Minister of New Zealand from 1984 to 1989. His tenure was marked by bold reforms in economic policy and a staunch anti-nuclear stance that elevated New Zealand’s international reputation.

Early Life and Career
Born: August 4, 1942, in Otahuhu, Auckland.
Education:
Studied law at the University of Auckland.
Became a practicing barrister and solicitor, earning a reputation for his skillful advocacy and sharp wit.
Before entering politics, he worked as a criminal defense lawyer, often representing disadvantaged individuals.

Political Career
Entry into Politics:
Lange entered Parliament in 1977 as the Labour Party MP for Mangere, a working-class electorate.
Quickly rose through the Labour Party ranks due to his charisma and exceptional oratory skills.

Prime Minister (1984–1989):
Led the Labour Party to a landslide victory in the 1984 general election, becoming New Zealand’s youngest prime minister of the 20th century at age 41.
His government introduced sweeping economic reforms under Finance Minister Roger Douglas, known as “Rogernomics”, which included:
Deregulation of the economy.
Privatization of state assets.
Introduction of a goods and services tax (GST).
Removal of agricultural subsidies.
While these reforms modernized New Zealand’s economy, they were controversial and alienated parts of Labour’s traditional support base.

Anti-Nuclear Policy:
Lange is perhaps best remembered internationally for his staunch opposition to nuclear weapons.
In 1985, his government banned nuclear-powered and nuclear-armed ships from entering New Zealand waters, a bold move that effectively suspended New Zealand’s role in the ANZUS defense alliance with the United States and Australia.
His famous 1985 Oxford Union debate—where he argued, “I can smell the uranium on your breath!”—solidified his reputation as a brilliant debater and a global symbol of anti-nuclear advocacy.

Resignation:
Tensions within his government, particularly with Roger Douglas over economic policies, led to his resignation as prime minister in 1989.
He retired from Parliament in 1996.

Post-Political Life and Legacy
After leaving politics, Lange focused on writing and commentary. His autobiography, “My Life,” was published in 2005, shortly before his death.
Lange suffered from poor health throughout his life, including obesity and diabetes. He passed away on August 13, 2005, due to complications from renal failure.
His leadership, particularly his anti-nuclear stance, remains a defining chapter in New Zealand’s history.

Personal Life
Lange was known for his sharp intellect, wit, and humor. Despite the heavy responsibilities of office, he retained a down-to-earth personality that resonated with many New Zealanders.
Married twice, he had four children.

Legacy
David Lange is widely regarded as one of New Zealand’s most influential leaders. His anti-nuclear stance has left a lasting imprint on the country’s identity, and his economic reforms, while polarizing, reshaped New Zealand’s economy for decades.
