Birth: Edwin Powell Hubble was born on November 20, 1889, in Marshfield, Missouri, USA.
Education: Hubble attended the University of Chicago, where he studied mathematics and astronomy, graduating in 1910. He then went to Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar, initially studying law before switching to Spanish and literature, earning a degree in 1913. Later, he returned to the University of Chicago to complete his PhD in astronomy in 1917.
Early Career
Military Service: During World War I, Hubble served in the U.S. Army, rising to the rank of major. After the war, he resumed his astronomical work.
Mount Wilson Observatory: In 1919, Hubble joined the Mount Wilson Observatory in California, which housed the largest telescope in the world at that time, the 100-inch Hooker Telescope.
Major Contributions to Astronomy
Discovery of Cepheid Variables in Andromeda: One of Hubble’s first major discoveries was identifying Cepheid variable stars in the Andromeda Galaxy (then known as the Andromeda Nebula). Using these variable stars as standard candles, he determined that Andromeda was far outside the Milky Way, establishing that it was a separate galaxy. This discovery, made in 1923-1924, significantly expanded the known scale of the universe.
Classification of Galaxies: Hubble developed a classification scheme for galaxies, known as the Hubble Sequence or Hubble Tuning Fork. This system categorized galaxies into ellipticals, spirals, and lenticulars, providing a framework still used today.
Hubble’s Law: Perhaps Hubble’s most profound contribution came in 1929 when he formulated what is now known as Hubble’s Law. He observed that galaxies are moving away from us, and the farther they are, the faster they seem to be receding. Recognition and Honors: Hubble received numerous accolades for his contributions to astronomy, including the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society and the Bruce Medal. However, he never received a Nobel Prize, as there was no category for astronomy at the time.
Death: Edwin Hubble passed away on September 28, 1953, in San Marino, California.
