Ancient and Early Medieval Periods
Prehistoric and Celtic Periods: The area now known as Austria was inhabited by various Celtic tribes before becoming part of the Roman Empire around 15 BC. The Romans established the province of Noricum.
Migration Period: Following the fall of the Roman Empire, the region was invaded by various Germanic tribes, including the Ostrogoths and Lombards. By the 6th century, the Bavarians had settled in the area.
Charlemagne and the Carolingian Empire: In the late 8th century, Charlemagne incorporated the region into his empire, establishing the Avar March, a frontier region to defend against the Avars.

Habsburg Monarchy
