Ancient and Early Medieval Periods
Prehistoric Times: Archaeological evidence suggests that human settlements in Azerbaijan date back to the Stone Age. The region was inhabited by various tribes and cultures.
Caucasian Albania: In antiquity, much of present-day Azerbaijan was part of Caucasian Albania, a kingdom established in the 4th century BCE. It later became a vassal state of various empires, including the Roman Empire.
Zoroastrian Influence: The region was influenced by Zoroastrianism, which left a lasting cultural and religious impact.

Islamic Era and Medieval States
Islamic Conquest: In the 7th century, Arab armies conquered the region, bringing Islam. The area became part of the Umayyad and later the Abbasid Caliphates.
Seljuk and Mongol Periods: From the 11th century, the Seljuk Turks and later the Mongols controlled Azerbaijan. The Mongol invasion in the 13th century caused significant devastation.
Local Dynasties: Various local dynasties, such as the Shirvanshahs and the Atabegs of Azerbaijan, gained prominence during this period.

Safavid and Qajar Rule
Safavid Dynasty: In the 16th century, Azerbaijan became a core region of the Safavid Empire, founded by Shah Ismail I. The Safavids established Twelver Shia Islam as the state religion.
Ottoman-Safavid Wars: The region was frequently contested between the Safavid and Ottoman Empires, leading to several wars.
Qajar Dynasty: In the 18th century, Azerbaijan fell under the control of the Qajar Dynasty of Persia. The Russo-Persian Wars in the early 19th century resulted in significant territorial changes.

Russian and Soviet Rule
Russian Conquest: The Treaty of Gulistan (1813) and the Treaty of Turkmenchay (1828) following the Russo-Persian Wars ceded parts of Azerbaijan to the Russian Empire.
Oil Boom: The discovery of oil in the late 19th century turned Baku into a major oil-producing city, attracting international attention and investment.
Azerbaijan Democratic Republic: Following the Russian Revolution of 1917, Azerbaijan declared independence on May 28, 1918, establishing the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic. It was the first secular democratic republic in the Muslim world.

Nagorno-Karabakh Conflict: Independence was followed by a violent conflict with Armenia over the Nagorno-Karabakh region, leading to a protracted and unresolved dispute.
Heydar Aliyev Era: Heydar Aliyev, a former Soviet leader, became President in 1993. His presidency brought stability and significant economic reforms, particularly in the oil and gas sector.
Ilham Aliyev Presidency: Heydar Aliyev’s son, Ilham Aliyev, succeeded him in 2003 and continues to serve as President. His tenure has seen continued economic growth, particularly from energy exports, but also criticism over human rights and democratic practices.

Recent Developments
2020 Nagorno-Karabakh War: In September 2020, a new round of fighting broke out between Azerbaijan and Armenia over Nagorno-Karabakh. A ceasefire brokered by Russia in November 2020 resulted in Azerbaijan regaining control over parts of the disputed territory.
Economic Growth: Azerbaijan has leveraged its vast oil and natural gas reserves to drive economic growth, invest in infrastructure, and improve living standards. The Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline is a key project in this regard.
Cultural Revival: Azerbaijan has worked to promote its cultural heritage, including traditional music, literature, and arts, while modernizing its capital, Baku, into a cosmopolitan city.
