Early History
Pre-Colonial Period:
Indigenous Peoples: Before the arrival of Europeans, the region was inhabited by various ethnic groups including the Dei, Bassa, Kru, Gola, and Kissi. These groups had established their own complex societies with trade networks.
Colonization and Founding
American Colonization Society:
Formation and Objectives: The American Colonization Society (ACS), founded in 1816, aimed to resettle freed African Americans in Africa. This movement was partly motivated by the belief that free blacks would face better opportunities in Africa and partly by the desire of some white Americans to remove them from the U.S.
First Settlements: In 1822, the ACS established the first settlement, which would become Monrovia, named after U.S. President James Monroe. This area was chosen as the base for the new colony.
Republic of Liberia:
Declaration of Independence: On July 26, 1847, Liberia declared its independence, becoming the first African republic to do so. The constitution was modeled after that of the United States, and Joseph Jenkins Roberts, a freeborn African American from Virginia, became the first president.

20th Century Developments: Liberia saw periods of economic growth and modernization efforts, especially under President William Tubman (1944-1971), who promoted infrastructure development and increased international diplomacy.
Political Instability and Civil Wars:
Coup and Instability: In 1980, a coup led by Samuel Doe overthrew the Americo-Liberian dominated government. This marked the beginning of a period of political instability and ethnic tension.
First Civil War (1989-1997): The First Liberian Civil War erupted in 1989, led by Charles Taylor’s National Patriotic Front of Liberia (NPFL). The war was brutal and resulted in the deaths of an estimated 200,000 people.
Second Civil War (1999-2003): A second civil war broke out in 1999, further devastating the country. It ended in 2003 with the resignation of Charles Taylor, who was later tried for war crimes.
Post-War Reconstruction:
Ellen Johnson Sirleaf: In 2005, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf was elected as the first female president in Africa. Her presidency focused on rebuilding the nation, promoting peace, and addressing corruption.
Recent Developments: Liberia continues to work on economic development, improving infrastructure, and healing the social divisions caused by years of conflict.
