Early History
Prehistoric and Ancient Times:
Early Inhabitants: The area of modern Lithuania was inhabited by various Baltic tribes as early as 10,000 BCE. By the first millennium BCE, these tribes had developed into a more cohesive culture.
Formation of Baltic Tribes: By the early Middle Ages, the Baltic tribes, including the Lithuanians, Latgalians, and others, were well established in the region.

Medieval Period
Grand Duchy of Lithuania (1236-1795):
Formation: The Grand Duchy of Lithuania was established by Mindaugas, who became its first king in 1253. This marked the consolidation of various Lithuanian tribes under a single ruler.
Expansion: Under Grand Duke Gediminas (1316-1341) and his successors, Lithuania expanded significantly, eventually becoming the largest state in Europe during the 14th century. The territory included present-day Belarus, Ukraine, and parts of Poland and Russia.
Union with Poland: In 1386, Grand Duke Jogaila married Queen Jadwiga of Poland, creating the Polish-Lithuanian union. This led to the formal creation of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in 1569, a dual state with a single monarch, which lasted until 1795.

Modern Period
Partitions and Russian Rule (1795-1918):
Partitions of Poland: The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was gradually partitioned by Russia, Prussia, and Austria. By 1795, Lithuania was fully annexed by the Russian Empire.
19th Century Nationalism: During the 19th century, nationalist movements began to rise in Lithuania, driven by a desire to preserve the Lithuanian language and culture.

Independence and Interwar Period (1918-1940):
Declaration of Independence: On February 16, 1918, Lithuania declared its independence from Russia. The newly independent state faced conflicts with Poland and Soviet Russia but managed to establish its sovereignty.
Interwar Years: During the interwar period, Lithuania struggled with internal political instability but managed to develop its economy and infrastructure.

World War II and Soviet Occupation (1940-1990):
Soviet and Nazi Occupations: In 1940, Lithuania was occupied by the Soviet Union, followed by Nazi Germany in 1941, and then re-occupied by the Soviets in 1944. The occupations were marked by severe repression, deportations, and the Holocaust.
Soviet Republic: After World War II, Lithuania was incorporated into the Soviet Union as the Lithuanian SSR. The Soviet period saw efforts to suppress Lithuanian nationalism and culture, though resistance persisted.

Independence and Modern Era
Restoration of Independence (1990-Present):
Independence Restored: On March 11, 1990, Lithuania became the first Soviet republic to declare the restoration of independence. The move was initially met with resistance from Moscow, but Lithuania’s independence was widely recognized by 1991.
Post-Soviet Development: Lithuania transitioned to a market economy and democratic governance. It joined the European Union and NATO in 2004, signaling its integration into Western political and economic structures.
