Early History
Founding of Luxembourg: The history of Luxembourg began in 963 CE when Siegfried, Count of the Ardennes, acquired a rocky promontory called Lucilinburhuc (Little Fortress) through an exchange with the Abbey of Saint Maximin in Trier. This site, which evolved into Luxembourg Castle, marked the foundation of Luxembourg as a distinct entity.
Strategic Location: Due to its strategic position at the crossroads of Western Europe, Luxembourg developed into a significant fortification and a key point of military and political interest for various regional powers.

Middle Ages and Early Modern Period
County of Luxembourg: Throughout the Middle Ages, Luxembourg expanded its territory and influence. In 1354, Emperor Charles IV elevated it to the status of a duchy. The House of Luxembourg produced several Holy Roman Emperors, including Charles IV, Wenceslaus, and Sigismund.

Independence and Neutrality
Treaty of London (1839): The Treaty of London partitioned Luxembourg, ceding the western part to Belgium and affirming the independence of the eastern part. Luxembourg remained in personal union with the Netherlands but became an independent and neutral state.
End of the Personal Union (1890): When King William III of the Netherlands died without a male heir, the personal union ended. The Grand Duchy passed to the House of Nassau-Weilburg, with Adolphe becoming the first independent Grand Duke of Luxembourg.

20th Century and World Wars
