History of the Lincoln Memorial

The Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., is one of the most iconic monuments in the United States. Dedicated to Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States, it commemorates his leadership during the Civil War and his commitment to preserving the Union and ending slavery. Inside the memorial, the central feature is the 19-foot-tall statue of Lincoln, seated and contemplative, facing east toward the Reflecting Pool and the Washington Monument.
Two of Lincoln’s most famous speeches, the Gettysburg Address and his Second Inaugural Address, are inscribed on the interior walls.
Murals by Jules Guerin depict allegorical themes of emancipation and unity.
