History of the Royal Gorge Bridge

The bridge was completed in November 1929 at a cost of approximately $350,000 (equivalent to about $5 million today).

2013 Royal Gorge Fire
One of the most challenging events in the bridge’s history was the devastating Royal Gorge Fire in June 2013.

Extent of the Fire: The fire swept through Royal Gorge Park, burning over 3,200 acres and destroying much of the infrastructure around the bridge. Approximately 48 of the park’s 52 buildings were lost to the flames.

Bridge Damage: Miraculously, the bridge itself suffered only partial damage. About 100 wooden planks were damaged or destroyed, but the main structure, including the steel cables and supports, survived largely intact.

Rebuilding Efforts: After the fire, extensive rebuilding efforts took place to restore and improve the park. Reconstruction included new facilities, fire-resistant buildings, and updated attractions. The park reopened in 2014 with a renewed focus on safety, sustainability, and modernized visitor facilities.
