King Aethelbert (860 – 866)

Æthelbert (also spelled Ethelbert) was King of Wessex from 860 to 866. He was part of the House of Wessex, a royal dynasty that eventually unified England. Æthelbert was the second son of King Æthelwulf of Wessex and the elder brother of the famous King Alfred the Great. His reign occurred during a time of increasing Viking invasions in England, and although he is not as well known as some of his successors, Æthelbert played an important role in maintaining the stability of the kingdom.

Early Life and Background
Born in the Early 830s: Æthelbert was likely born in the early 830s as the second son of King Æthelwulf and his wife Osburh. Æthelwulf was a powerful king who ruled Wessex from 839 to 858 and secured Wessex’s prominence in southern England. As the second son, Æthelbert was initially not expected to inherit the throne, as the succession would have typically passed to his elder brother, Æthelbald.

Division of the Kingdom: Before Æthelwulf’s death in 858, he divided the rule of his kingdom between his sons. Æthelbald, the eldest, took control of Wessex, while Æthelbert became the king of Kent, a sub-kingdom within the wider domain of the West Saxon kings. This arrangement reflected the growing need to manage different parts of the kingdom more efficiently in the face of external threats.

Reign as King of Wessex and Kent (860–866)
Unification of Wessex and Kent:
Succession after Æthelbald’s Death: When Æthelbald died in 860, Æthelbert succeeded him as King of Wessex. Instead of keeping the kingdom divided, as his father had done, Æthelbert chose to unite Wessex and Kent under a single crown. This decision strengthened the kingdom by consolidating power in southern England and simplifying governance.

Stability in the South: During Æthelbert’s reign, Wessex remained relatively stable, despite the ongoing Viking threat that was ravaging other parts of England, especially Northumbria and East Anglia. His rule is generally considered peaceful, with no major internal conflicts recorded.

Viking Threat:
Viking Invasions: The mid-9th century was marked by increasing Viking raids across England. While Æthelbert’s reign did not witness the full-scale invasions that would later plague Wessex during the reign of his younger brother Alfred, there were significant Viking attacks during this time. In 865, the Great Heathen Army, a large Viking force, arrived in England, though its main targets initially were the northern and eastern kingdoms.

Defensive Measures: Æthelbert likely took measures to defend his kingdom against these threats, building on the defensive strategies established by his father and elder brother. These included the construction of fortifications and maintaining a strong army to repel potential raids.

Death and Succession
Death in 866: Æthelbert died in 866, after a six-year reign. He left no known children, and his death marked the passing of the crown to his younger brother, Æthelred, who succeeded him as King of Wessex. Æthelred would face even greater challenges from the Vikings, culminating in the famous campaigns fought by Alfred the Great.

Legacy
Consolidation of Wessex: Although Æthelbert’s reign was relatively short and not marked by major military victories or significant political reforms, his decision to unite Wessex and Kent under one rule laid the groundwork for the future unification of England. By bringing these territories together, Æthelbert ensured that Wessex remained the dominant kingdom in southern England, providing stability in the face of the Viking threat.

Part of the House of Wessex: Æthelbert’s reign is often seen as a transitional period between the reigns of his father and brothers, all of whom played key roles in defending England from Viking invasions. His brother Alfred the Great would go on to become one of England’s most celebrated monarchs, but Æthelbert’s peaceful rule helped maintain the continuity and stability of the West Saxon dynasty.
