The Bounty was on a mission to Tahiti to collect breadfruit plants and transport them to the Caribbean. The idea was to grow breadfruit as a cheap food source for enslaved people on British plantations.

Life on the Bounty
Things started off fine, but after a 5-month stay in Tahiti, the crew got pretty comfy — they enjoyed the relaxed life, formed relationships with the locals, and got a taste of paradise. When the captain, Lieutenant William Bligh ordered them to leave, morale tanked.

Bligh was known for his strict discipline, though not unusually cruel for the time. Still, his constant criticism and possibly abrasive leadership style built tension.

The Mutiny
On April 28, 1789, Fletcher Christian led a group of mutineers who seized the ship without bloodshed. They put Bligh and 18 loyal crewmen in a small launch (a long open boat) and set them adrift in the Pacific.

Bligh’s Voyage
Bligh managed to navigate over 3,600 nautical miles (more than 6,500 km) to Timor, in what is considered one of the most amazing feats of seamanship and survival in history. He only lost one man during this journey.

What Happened to the Mutineers?
The mutineers split up:
Some stayed in Tahiti — many were later captured and returned to England for trial.
Christian and others sailed to Pitcairn Island (incorrectly charted on maps) where they burned the Bounty to hide. They lived there in isolation.
By the time the island was discovered decades later, most of the original mutineers were dead due to conflict or illness. Some of their descendants still live on Pitcairn today.

The Aftermath
Court-martials were held. Out of 10 captured mutineers:
3 were hanged.
4 were acquitted.
3 were pardoned.

Legacy in Pop Culture
The mutiny became the basis for:
Novels (eg Mutiny on the Bounty trilogy by Nordhoff and Hall),
Multiple films — most notably:
1935 (Clark Gable, Charles Laughton),
1962 (Marlon Brando),
1984 (The Bounty with Mel Gibson and Anthony Hopkins).
