The September 11 attacks, often referred to as 9/11, were a series of coordinated terrorist attacks carried out by the extremist group al-Qaeda against the United States on the morning of Tuesday, September 11, 2001. The attacks had a profound impact on the U.S. and the world, leading to significant changes in global politics, security, and international relations.

Hijacking and Crash of Airplanes:
American Airlines Flight 11: At 8:46 AM, the first plane, American Airlines Flight 11, was crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York City.
United Airlines Flight 175: At 9:03 AM, United Airlines Flight 175 crashed into the South Tower of the World Trade Center.
American Airlines Flight 77: At 9:37 AM, American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, causing a partial collapse of the building’s west side.
United Airlines Flight 93: At 10:03 AM, United Airlines Flight 93 crashed into a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after passengers attempted to overcome the hijackers. It is believed the hijackers intended to target either the White House or the U.S. Capitol.

Collapse of the World Trade Center Towers:
The South Tower of the World Trade Center collapsed at 9:59 AM, followed by the North Tower at 10:28 AM. The collapse resulted in massive debris clouds and extensive damage to surrounding buildings.

Casualties and Damage:
Deaths: Nearly 3,000 people were killed in the attacks, including 2,606 in the World Trade Center and the surrounding area, 125 at the Pentagon, and 246 on the four planes. The victims included citizens from over 90 countries.
Injuries: Thousands of people were injured, with many suffering long-term health effects from inhaling dust and debris.
Destruction: The attacks caused significant destruction, including the complete collapse of the World Trade Center complex and severe damage to the Pentagon. The economic impact was immense, with direct costs estimated in the tens of billions of dollars.

Immediate Response and Aftermath
Emergency Response:
First responders, including firefighters, police officers, and emergency medical personnel, responded heroically to the attacks. Many lost their lives in the line of duty, particularly during the rescue efforts in the World Trade Center.

Grounding of Aircraft:
For the first time in history, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) grounded all commercial flights across the U.S. in response to the attacks.

Global Reaction:
The attacks prompted widespread international condemnation and expressions of solidarity with the United States. Countries around the world offered support and assistance.

Long-Term Impact
War on Terror:
In response to the attacks, President George W. Bush declared a “War on Terror.” The U.S. launched Operation Enduring Freedom, leading to the invasion of Afghanistan in October 2001 to dismantle al-Qaeda and remove the Taliban from power.
The War on Terror also led to the invasion of Iraq in 2003, based on allegations that Saddam Hussein possessed weapons of mass destruction and had ties to terrorist groups.

Homeland Security:
The attacks led to the creation of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in 2002, which consolidated multiple federal agencies to better coordinate national security efforts.
The USA PATRIOT Act was enacted to enhance law enforcement’s ability to prevent and respond to terrorist activities, though it also raised concerns about civil liberties and privacy.

Global Security Measures:
Security measures were significantly increased worldwide, particularly in aviation. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) was established to oversee airport security in the U.S.
Intelligence-sharing and counterterrorism efforts were intensified globally, with many countries implementing stricter security protocols.

Sociopolitical Effects:
The attacks had profound effects on American society, politics, and foreign policy. They intensified debates over issues such as civil liberties, immigration, and the balance between security and freedom.
Islamophobia and anti-Muslim sentiment increased, leading to discrimination and violence against Muslim communities in the U.S. and elsewhere.

Memorials and Commemorations
National September 11 Memorial & Museum:
Located at the World Trade Center site in New York City, the memorial and museum honor the victims and preserve the history of the attacks.

Pentagon Memorial:
The Pentagon Memorial in Arlington, Virginia, commemorates the 184 lives lost at the Pentagon and on American Airlines Flight 77.

Flight 93 National Memorial:
The Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, honors the passengers and crew of United Airlines Flight 93 who heroically thwarted the hijackers’ plans.
