The Code of Hammurabi

The Code of Hammurabi is a Babylonian legal text composed around 1754 BCE during the reign of King Hammurabi, the sixth king of the First Babylonian Dynasty. It’s one of the oldest deciphered writings of significant length in the world.

Medium: Most famously preserved on a stele (a tall stone pillar) that’s over 7 feet tall.

Structure and Content
The code contains 282 laws, written in a prologue-body-epilogue format:

Prologue:
Details Hammurabi’s divine appointment and justifications for his rule. It paints him as a “protector of the weak and oppressed.”

Body:
The laws cover a wide range of civil, criminal, and economic issues, including:
Property rights
Trade and contracts
Family law (marriage, divorce, inheritance)
Labor and slavery
Assault and punishment

Laws are highly specific and often follow the “if-then” structure, eg:
“If a man puts out the eye of another man, his eye shall be put out.” (Law 196)
“If he breaks another man’s bone, his bone shall be broken.” (Law 197)
This is where the phrase “an eye for an eye” (lex talionis) comes from.

It praises Hammurabi’s wisdom and warns future kings not to alter the laws.

Legal Philosophy
The Code isn’t exactly what we’d call “fair” by modern standards—it’s a class-based system:
Penalties vary depending on social status (free men, commoners, and slaves).
For example: injuring a nobleman could bring the death penalty, while the same act against a slave might just cost a fine.
It’s not universal justice, but it formalized law and order in a way that earlier societies didn’t.
