Warren G. Harding was the 29th President of the United States, serving from 1921 until his death in 1923. His presidency is often remembered for its scandals, but also for significant achievements and policies.

Early Life and Career
Birth and Education: Warren Gamaliel Harding was born on November 2, 1865, in Corsica (now Blooming Grove), Ohio. He attended Ohio Central College and graduated in 1882.
Journalism Career: Harding started his career in journalism, purchasing the Marion Daily Star newspaper in 1884. He successfully turned the struggling paper into a profitable business.
Political Career: Harding entered politics as a Republican, serving in the Ohio State Senate from 1899 to 1903 and as Lieutenant Governor of Ohio from 1904 to 1906. He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1914.

Presidential Election of 1920
Campaign: Harding won the Republican nomination for president in 1920, running on a platform of returning to “normalcy” after World War I. He promised a return to conservative values and a focus on domestic issues.
Victory: Harding won a landslide victory against Democratic candidate James M. Cox, capturing over 60% of the popular vote and 404 electoral votes.

Presidency (1921-1923)
Domestic Policies:
Economic Policy: Harding’s administration implemented pro-business policies, reducing taxes and government spending. The Emergency Tariff of 1921 and the Fordney-McCumber Tariff of 1922 were designed to protect American industries.
Immigration Restrictions: Harding signed the Emergency Quota Act of 1921, which established immigration quotas based on national origins, significantly reducing immigration from Eastern and Southern Europe.
Veterans’ Benefits: The Veterans’ Bureau was established to provide medical care and benefits to World War I veterans.

Foreign Policies:
Isolationism: Harding’s foreign policy emphasized isolationism, avoiding entanglement in European affairs.
Disarmament: The Washington Naval Conference (1921-1922) aimed at reducing naval armaments among major world powers, resulting in several key treaties.

Scandals:
Teapot Dome: The most infamous scandal of Harding’s administration involved the illegal leasing of naval oil reserves at Teapot Dome, Wyoming, and Elk Hills, California, to private oil companies in exchange for bribes.
Other Corruption: Several other scandals involving graft and corruption among Harding’s appointees, known as the “Ohio Gang,” came to light after his death.

Death and Legacy
Death: Harding died suddenly of a heart attack on August 2, 1923, while on a speaking tour in San Francisco, California. Vice President Calvin Coolidge succeeded him.
Legacy: Harding’s presidency is often ranked low by historians due to the numerous scandals and perceived lack of strong leadership. However, some scholars have re-evaluated his contributions, acknowledging his efforts in economic management and foreign policy.
