Anaximenes of Miletus

Anaximenes of Miletus (circa 586 – 526 BCE) was a pre-Socratic Greek philosopher and a prominent figure in the Milesian school of thought. He was a student or associate of Anaximander and, like his predecessors Thales and Anaximander, he sought to explain the nature of the cosmos through a fundamental principle (archê) and natural phenomena.

Anaximenes proposed that the fundamental substance of the universe was air (aēr). He believed that everything in the world is composed of air in different forms and densities. Heavenly Bodies: He suggested that the stars were fixed in a crystalline sphere that rotated around the Earth. The Sun and Moon, according to Anaximenes, were also composed of air and moved due to their innate properties and natural laws.

Meteorological Phenomena:
Anaximenes explained various meteorological phenomena, such as rain, wind, and lightning, through the transformations of air. He believed that clouds formed from the condensation of air, and rain occurred when these clouds further condensed. Lightning, he thought, was the result of the rapid separation of air due to the motion of clouds.

Philosophical Method:
Anaximenes continued the Milesian tradition of seeking naturalistic explanations for the origins and processes of the universe. His emphasis on a single underlying substance and natural processes contributed to the development of early scientific thought.
