Birth and Family: Socrates was born in Athens, Greece, around 470 BCE. His father, Sophroniscus, was a stonemason, and his mother, Phaenarete, was a midwife.
Military Service: Socrates served as a hoplite (a heavily armed foot soldier) in the Athenian military and participated in several significant battles, including Potidaea, Delium, and Amphipolis.
Appearance and Character: Socrates was known for his distinctive appearance, often described as unattractive, with a snub nose and bulging eyes. Despite his looks, he was renowned for his intellect and engaging conversational style.
Philosophical Approach:
Socratic Method: Also known as elenchus, the Socratic method involves asking a series of questions to stimulate critical thinking and illuminate ideas. This dialectical method aims to expose contradictions in the interlocutor’s thoughts and lead them to a clearer understanding.
Focus on Ethics: Socrates shifted the focus of philosophy from the natural sciences to ethics and human behavior. He believed in the importance of self-knowledge and that an unexamined life is not worth living.

Trial and Death:
Charges: In 399 BCE, Socrates was put on trial for impiety (disbelieving in the gods of the state) and corrupting the youth of Athens. His association with controversial figures and his habit of questioning the status quo likely contributed to his prosecution.
Defense and Conviction: During his trial, as recounted in Plato’s “Apology,” Socrates defended his actions as a service to the state, encouraging critical thinking and virtue. He was ultimately found guilty by an Athenian jury.
Execution: Socrates was sentenced to death by consuming a cup of poison hemlock. His calm and reasoned acceptance of his fate, as depicted in Plato’s “Phaedo,” became a powerful testament to his philosophical convictions.
