Ancient Period
D’mt and Aksumite Kingdoms: The Kingdom of D’mt (circa 10th century BCE) and the Aksumite Empire (circa 100 CE to 940 CE) are among the earliest known civilizations. Aksum, located in present-day northern Ethiopia, was a major trading empire and one of the great civilizations of the ancient world, known for its monumental obelisks and adoption of Christianity in the 4th century CE.

Medieval Period
Zagwe Dynasty: The Zagwe dynasty (circa 900-1270) succeeded the Aksumite Empire and is notable for its rock-hewn churches of Lalibela.
Solomonic Dynasty: The Solomonic dynasty, claiming descent from the biblical King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba, ruled from 1270 until the 20th century, with brief interruptions. This period saw the spread of Christianity, conflicts with neighboring Muslim states, and the establishment of a feudal system.

Modern History
19th Century and Menelik II: The 19th century was marked by internal conflicts and the struggle to fend off European colonial powers. Emperor Menelik II unified Ethiopia and successfully defended against Italian colonization at the Battle of Adwa in 1896.
Italian Occupation and Liberation: Italy briefly occupied Ethiopia from 1936 to 1941 during the Second Italo-Ethiopian War. Ethiopia was liberated with the help of Allied forces during World War II.
Haile Selassie and the Derg: Emperor Haile Selassie, a symbol of African independence and modernization, was deposed in 1974 by the Derg, a Marxist-Leninist military junta that led to a period of socialist rule, famine, and civil war.
Transition to Democracy: The Derg regime was overthrown in 1991, leading to the establishment of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia.
